Die Arbeit von Kjell Strandqvist hat zwei Seiten. Die eine Seite ist strikt und geordnet. Diese Seite ist in seiner Malerei zu sehen. Die andere Seite ist flexibel und unkontrolliert, sie wird durch seine Zeichnungen sichtbar. Er hat eine simple und unsentimentale Einstellung zur Kunst: Eine Einfachheit, die Komplexität nicht ausschließt. Das Werk von Kjell Strandqvist kombiniert oft das Klare mit dem Unklaren. Er benutzt auch Struktur oder eine einfache Form gerne als Vehikel bunter Ereignisse. Seine Farben genießen eine enge, phantasievolle Beziehung, die oftmals eher empfunden wird als gesehen. Seine Zeichnungen haben die gleichen Eigenschaften: Sie sind Boten offensichtlicher Mehrdeutigkeiten. Kjell Strandqvist ist sehr verbal und drückt seine Meinungen sehr
geradlinig aus. Er war von 1986 bis 1996 Kunstprofessor an der Stockholmer
Royal Academy of Art und beeinflusst stark die Lehrentwicklung der Akademie.
